In 2026, we’re heading to National Parks across the UK with giffgaff, meeting community groups who connect in nature. With 99% UK 4G and 5G coverage, giffgaff is connecting people even in the most wild places – told through three short documentaries, showing in cinemas nationwide.

Our first film takes us to Sutton Bank National Park Centre on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, where we see a local astronomy group come together for an evening of snowy stargazing.

A star-filled sky is one of nature's most natural wonders, crucial for wildlife and naturally functioning ecosystems but they’re increasingly under threat.

85% of us will never see the Milky Way from our front door and without action to reduce light pollution, this will only get worse for us and the natural world we rely on.

Impacts on wildlife, evolved over millions of years with natural day/night cycles, are proven. From blackbirds and robins waking too early and singing under streetlights to moths circling around lights instead of pollinating, bats staying in roosts and not feeding, insect development affected or even hedgehog behaviour disrupted, the effects are broad and severe.

How can we protect our Dark Skies and help wildlife?

Like any pollutant, light knows no boundaries, but it’s one of the easiest to fix. It’s not about no light, it’s about good light – to help us see what we’re doing and to feel safe. Light pollution can be solved with the angle of a light or the flick of a switch, which saves us money and reduces carbon emissions!

Whether we live in a remote area, in a village, town or city, we can all do our bit to help control light pollution in our surroundings.

Dark Skies Festival – a celebration of dark skies around National Parks

We’re also keen for people to enjoy, discover and understand more about why our dark skies need protecting. And what better way to celebrate our star-studded skies than at an annual Dark Skies Festival?

Since 2016's inaugural event in the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, Dark Skies Festivals have become an unmissable fixture in the calendar. This year the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and South Downs National Parks are celebrating the jewels of the night sky, with dozens of events planned during February 2026.

There are events for families, first-time stargazers and those wishing to expand their knowledge with talks from leading UK astronomers or astrophotography workshops. For the more active, enjoy after-dark walks, runs and bike rides, nocturnal nature evenings, or night navigation.
